I’ve seen a couple of people post about their app-defaults inspired by the latest Hemispheric Views podcast — Duel of the Defaults!

It’s the nearly the end of 2023, and surprisingly this time around it isn’t about the latest iPhone, ChatGPT or AI taking over our jobs! It’s always fun when you are a part of these niché internet-trends!

And.. a bunch of y’all were asking me to do it, so without furthur-ado!

Here is the list of apps I use:

  • 📨 Mail Client: Thunderbird/K-9 Mail
  • 📮 Mail Server: riseup.net
  • 📝 Notes: Paper notes
  • ✅ To-Do: Telegram: Saved Messages 🔖
  • 📷 GCam on my Redmi Note 5 (vince)
  • 🟦 Photo Management: I manually backup and sort photos by month
  • 📆 Calendar: Thunderbird/Etar + CalDav
  • 📁 Cloud File Storage: I don’t :P
  • 📖 RSS / news: newsboat
  • 🙍🏻‍♂️ Contacts: Simple Contacts
  • 📍 Maps: OSMAnd+, Google Maps (BLR traffic!!)
  • 🌐 Browser: Firefox
  • 💬 Chat: Telegram, Element, Beeper [matrix]
  • 📑 Read It Later: a simple todo.txt bound to SUPER+T on my keyboard that dumps anything in my clipboard
  • 📜 Word Processing: LaTeX for anything important, Markdown for everything else!
  • 📊 Presentations: sent(1)
  • 💰 Budgeting and Personal Finance: LibreOffice Calc
  • 🎵 Music: LastFM via /jukebox: a project which needs a blog post of it’s own!
  • 🎤 Podcasts: AntennaPod / newsboat RSS feeds
  • 🔐 Password Management: Bitwarden <3
  • 📂 IDE: nvim — /dotfiles
  • 🎥 Editing: kdenlive
  • 🦆 Search: DuckDuckGo
